FLOW
Second generation methods for Lean Product Development
Adelaide Technology Park Conference Centre, Mawson Lakes Boulevard, Mawson Lakes 15th August 2008

Exclusive one-day workshop, expertly facilitated by international consultant Donald Reinertsen.

  Why Lean Product Development?
The techniques that are now called “lean principles” have been used for over 50 years in production processes. Companies embracing these tools in manufacturing have achieved huge economic benefits—simultaneously improving quality, costs and cycle time. Why not apply these principles to product development ? Unfortunately, it is much harder than it sounds: everyone quickly agrees that waste should be eliminated, but no one really knows what waste is in product development.
This workshop will help participants identify and eliminate waste in product development and will provide an economic framework for determining which lean techniques will yield the greatest payback. Delegates will learn practical tips and strategies for applying the most important Lean techniques to product development processes.

‘A compelling new model for profitable product development. Don Reinertsen reveals some of the best kept secrets to running a
decision and profit based development process.’

- Robert T. Franzo, Lucent Technologies

  Who should attend?
This program is designed for managers who play a role in product development. It will be particularly useful to companies that are reaching the point of diminishing returns using conventional approaches to product development and those who wish to quickly get benefits using lean methods.
It is preferred that participants have a basic understanding of lean techniques and at least 5 years of experience in product development. The techniques covered are general methods of analysis rather than industry specific rules. Just as physics applies to both large objects and small ones, the methods used in this course can be applied in a wide variety of industries.

  About the facilitator: Don Reinertsen
Don Reinertsen has been called the “GURU” of Lean Product development. He is the author of a forthcoming book on lean product development. His previous publications include: “Managing the Design factory” and “Developing Products in Half the Time”. His contributions in the field of product development have been recognized internationally. He is particularly noted for bringing fresh perspectives and quantitative rigor to the development process.

In 1983, while a consultant at McKinsey & Co., he wrote a landmark article in Electronic Business magazine that first quantified the value of development speed. This article has been cited in the frequently quoted McKinsey study that indicated “6 months delay can be worth 33 percent of lifecycle profits.” He coined the term “Fuzzy Front End” in 1983 and began applying world class manufacturing techniques in product development in 1985. Don Reinertsen holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and and M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School.
